🎂 Warehouse Circus - Celebrating 35 Years
Each week, we will be sharing a small piece of Warehouse Circus history to celebrate our 35th birthday!
This week we’re looking back at 2023!
Warehouse Circus goes back to back with a second Canberra Circus Festival! Interest in the festival means it doubles in size before we had time to cut off enrolments. The festival site moved to the Chifley Oval, and increased attendance by several hundred patrons. It received more support from the ACT Government via Events ACT and ArtsACT, including funding for a special emerging artist development program with ROOKE from Tasmania.
Arts Minister, the Honourable Tara Cheyne, MLA opens the festival with the keynote speech, and 5 local and federal ministers are in attendance. Youth Circuses participate from 5 states and territories, with 72 youth artists, 9 shows including our first international act. The festival welcomes back several graduates to perform and teach, including Lewie West performing with Rooke, Jake Silvestro performing with Wondertrunk Circus, Jack Wild performing with Cab Suave, Pablo Latona performing solo.
The festival is again a success, The next festival is slated for 2025!
Jake Silvestro presents December, a massive solo performance piece at the Canberra Theatre Centre.
Swinburne University announces a surprise pause on enrolments for the National Institute of Circus Arts, placing the future of the school in jeopardy, and massively disrupting the plans of dozens of young artists from around the country.
In response, Warehouse begins production on “We’re Home”, our new major work, adjusted so that our emerging artist program takes on a larger role in the creation and delivery of the performance, with youth directors, producers; costume, set, and sound designers. Warehouse Circus provides support, mentoring, and supervision.'
Warehouse Circus starts our first Playgroup! A circus themed activity for families, supervised by a great circus trainer. It could be a supportive avenue to help kids find circus from an early age.
Cecilia Martin joins the cast of “A Good Catch’ circus and debuted her solo show ‘Break’.
Chelsea Hall joins the cast of CiRCA.
Benton Adams Walker joins the cast of Cirque Du Soleil.
Tom Adams-Walker joins the cast of Les Sept Doigts de la Main.
